Is there a dummies book?
Jump on it, quick (if it gets good reviews)! And of course instructor(s) may have some good hints, too. And there may be some other good library books in the vicinity.
Don't worry - it's not desperate. The first lecture just assumed quite a bit of background knowledge I do not (yet) have.
Thankfully, class participation does not appear to be (directly) a factor in the grade (though it's unlikely that his impression of our knowledge, etc., from what we say in class will have no bearing on his evaluation), but he does have a policy of calling on people in class to answer questions. Greaaaaat.
