I don't think it was a hooded skunk. I think I commented at the time that it looked like a rug - that is, it was unexpectedly wide for what I believed was a skunk.
If I were to throw the ID back open, I'd be more likely to lean towards the Hognosed Skunks. They are big, but not as big, I fear, as what we saw.
Now I am glad that it is a raccoon that comes into our backyard!
Yeah, it's hard to get across how big this guy looked - he was walking across somebody's lawn at close range, so I feel that the sense of size is reasonably accurate.
