Before I got glasses, my brain had dealt with the binocular disparity (and the disparity between my (better) right eye and (worse) left eye) by simply ignoring the data coming from the left eye most of the time.

When I first started wearing glasses, I complained about a weird effect that the glasses were making. Everything looked like a stereoscope. It then occured to me that what I was seeing was this "binocular vision" thing animals with two forward-facing eyes are supposed to have.
I still am lousy at perceiving distance and especially changes in distance - which manifests mostly as panicking passengers as a car brakes in front of me while I'm driving and I don't immediately notice the decreasing distance between that car and mine.

I can place the finger over one, or the other, or between the two, but in all cases, I can still see (but not read, too out of focus) the cartoon.
On the truncated view - my peripheral vision has always been horrible, but I think that my brain did use the left-eye data for areas the right eye was blocked from seeing. Hence the doubled vision. If I hold my head still and look 'askance' to the left or right, I see what is there, (input from the eye on that side) as well as a ghost of my nose (input from the 'wrong' side eye). Maybe it wasn't as much it wasn't using the data as it wasn't processing it as binocular vision, it was processing it as doubled vision.
