OK, this got me curious:
"A friend suggested this exercise: go to your Amazon orders page, and see what the very first thing you ordered from Amazon was."
In June 1999, I ordered Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.
The last book I bought on Amazon that was not school-related was in December 2006! (Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert.) I've been making good use of libraries and used bookstores (online and otherwise) these last few years.

"The Structure of Economics", by Eugene Silberberg, September 1998. This would have been for my Mathematics of Economics class, 1st semester at ATM. My first non-school purchase was the 1999 World Almanac, 1999 Brookman stamp catalog, and the Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book, three-ring binder edition, on July 6, 1999.
Rick and I share an amazon account, so his/our first purchase was "Deleites De La Cocina Mexicana: Healthy Mexican American Cooking" in 1998. The next purchase was a year later... "Writing Solid Code".
The account we have now goes back to 2005 when I purchased Zuruck Zur Leibe by Roger Whitaker (a music CD) for your Dad. I must have had another account before that - I don't remember the particulars to look it up.
Mine was in late 1998 - a book on learning to play the recorder, apparently.
An interesting selection of purchases.
My current account began in 2002 with the purchase of a DVD of Brotherhood of the Wolf.
