It's been something of a rough couple of weeks for me. I know that the political situation alone is enough to get a person depressed, but add to that cold winds that bring tears to your eyes within minutes, the time change that takes forever to adjust to, generalized fatigue, the sense of fighting off the onslaught of multiple would-be illnesses at once, and the hopelessness of my workplace's budget for the coming fiscal year (and the attendant anxiety of the inevitable impending layoffs), and it sucks. Oh, did I mention being so freaking tired? Yeah, I am.
There's pretty much fuck all I can do about most of these things, so I've been relying on a distraction strategy to get me through, which is sort of at odds with blogging, an introspective endeavor.
I have been able to exercise all but 1 day so far this month (some Pokemon Go, some exercise bike/Agents of SHIELD) so it could be worse.
Last night I went to bed with a fever and overall body aches, and I slept better than it felt like I should be able to, I guess due to overwhelming exhaustion. Today I stayed home from work and despite my best efforts, didn't manage to get any more sleep. I did develop a headache late in the afternoon, though, which didn't improve anything. I pretty much need to be put in an induced coma for a few weeks to get enough rest.
So...yeah, some variant of the above is what you've been missing lately during my blogging hiatus. You're welcome.
"Purple Homebody"--Monday, 3/20/17
A sunny day and a high temperature of 53 F, so 70 F or so inside the apartment. It's odd, I'm actually dressing in spring-like clothing (if not spring-like colors) on the first day of spring. Not a familiar feeling these last few years.
Burgundy/mint birds blouse (Loft), $8.33/wear
Black skinny jeans (thrifted, YMI), $0.33/wear
Black pointy-toed flats (Nordstrom), $1.72/wear
Purple/gold medallion necklace (Macy's), $1.70/wear
Outfit total: $12.08/wear
This bunny says, You had a pity party and didn't even invite me? Harrumph.
In other news...This is pretty cute. I think Bert and Oscar steal the show...but I always think that.

Spring Forward
"Queen Bun"--Saturday, 3/11/17
Be still, my beating bunny-loving heart!
I mean, seriously, this is one absolutely fabulous rabbit blouse. Bunnies, birds, flowers, uh...horns? That is truly a whimsical print right there.
And I like how she wore it with a herringbone tweed blazer for meeting clients.
Time for me to give my silly rabbit top an outing with my black herringbone blazer, no? And nothing dresses it up for the weekend like this fancy crystal human necklace/bunny crown.
French bunny top (Macy's), $0.68/wear
Black herringbone blazer (thrifted, Studio 1940), $0.42/wear
Skinny jeans (JCP), $0.39/wear
Grey leopard flats by Fergilicious, $0.52/wear
Blue/crystal bib necklace (Baublebar), $4.73/wear
Outfit total: $6.74/wear
Hello Target Shoppers--Sunday, 3/12/17
For a late morning Target run with possible snow, I went with layers and rubber-soled boots. Luckily the snow didn't start until after we got home, but it was nice to wear this outfit (with a burgundy fleece cap and scarf) without a coat. It's always too warm inside a store when you have all your winter gear on. It was pretty brisk venturing across the parking lot, but it was worth it to feel comfortable inside where I brought the rabbit things (since they started making their Easter merchandise available). Note that I didn't buy all the rabbit things. In fact, I didn't buy any of the adorable rabbit-shaped food that was available, and there was a lot of it. I have to leave something for the Easter Bunny to do, right?
Grey pullover sweater (thrifted, Laura Scott), $1.31/wear
Navy button up shirt (Eddie Bauer), $2.50/wear
Navy quilted vest (thrifted, Kohls), $2.06/wear
Denim skirt (thrifted, Levi's), $0.50/wear
Grey sweater tights + tall grey boots by LifeStride, $5.56/wear
Chunky silver blob necklace (JNY), $2.08/wear
Outfit total: $14.01/wear
This mini lop is looking for the good stuff.
In other news...This evening I made pepper steak using an Instant Pot recipe that my dad made a couple times when we were visiting at Christmas. I had to call the InstaPot Recipe Hotline (i.e., my parents' house; my dad has re-branded the device InstaPot, which I have to agree is a name that rolls more nicely off the tongue) a couple of times for clarification, but it was easy to make and it turned out really fabulous. (Yes, I taste-tested a bite...or a dozen.) I'm looking forward to having something yummy and different from my usual for lunch at work this week.
I'm needing something to make me look forward to going to work. Nothing against my workplace or job specifically, but somehow losing one hour of the day to the time change and several hours to shopping/cooking has me feeling like the weekend was only one day long. And that shit ain't right!

Hey Peeps
"Pep(lum) In My Step"--Friday, 3/10/17
Friday of an unexpectedly mentally exhausting week...I wasn't peppy exactly, but I was happy about the work week coming to an end.
Not so happy about the return of Serious Winter with a low of 5 F and a high of 18 F. Especially since the outfit I'd put together wasn't really warm enough for that. Well, thanks to the addition of a pair of trouser socks and the heating pad I use as a seat warmer at work, I managed to do OK.
*Burgundy peplum pullover sweater (Loft), $17.44/wear
Skinny jeans (JCP), $0.40/wear
Black tipped blazer (JNY), $3.41/wear
Beige/pink birds scarf (Kohls), $1.25/wear
Black buckle flats by Me Too, $2.33/wear
(unpictured because I forgot) Gold tassel necklace (Kohls), $0.83/wear
Outfit total: $25.66/wear
This otter mini rex wears black with white edging every day. What effortless chic.
In other news...Study suggests that humblebragging might work in interview situations, when asked the dreaded "What is your weakness?" question, if your goal is to seem more competent, dependable, and flexible. Rosy, Squirrely, and Trumped Up
"Rosy Brown"--Wednesday, 3/8/17
Rosy Brown is so the name of a children's book character, am I right? What do you think this character would be like? I'm envisioning a young black girl who after reading an Encyclopedia Brown book decides that she would be an even better detective...and is.
It's easy to miss how this inspiration outfit got translated into mine but look carefully...
She's wearing (lighter shades of) pink and brown, yes, but it's the maroon boots (or hers might be shoes, I don't know) that shifted the direction of this outfit a bit away from what I would have chosen to wear on my own.
Dusky pink pullover sweater (Loft), $4.95/wear
Brown corduroy skirt (thrifted, Walmart), $0.43/wear
Brown leopard scarf (Kohls), $1.41/wear
Brown tights
Maroon ankle boots by Dolce Vita, $6.25/wear
Outfit total: $13.04/wear
I would normally have worn this with tall brown boots or, if I wanted to be a little less obvious, tall cognac boots, but the maroon ankle boots were a fun alternative. And of course I wore a long scarf with it, which is pretty much my signature look.
"And This Blazer, Again"--Thursday, 3/9/17
I've become really attracted to this blazer lately, so be expecting to see it again in the not-distant future. Last time I wore it, I described the outfit as a little on the style clown end of the minimalist-maximalist spectrum. This time, I hit more like 65% of the way toward maximalist, which is a very comfortable place for me to be.
Alice often hangs out around that point in the spectrum, too. This inspiration outfit is actually pretty low key for her with no pattern mixing that I can see. Her statement shoes carry a lot on their own, though.
I kept my shoes unremarkable--some comfy wedges that blend in with the tights--and did do a bit of pattern mixing by adding this paintstroke-patterned scarf. Of course, the blazer is pattern-mixed all on its own with stripes and polka dots...plus edging in black (like along the sleeve) or more polka dots. I really loved wearing this outfit. The color combination and mix of prints was just spot on for me. This skirt is a little dangerous to wear with bare legs sitting down, but with tights, I enjoy the slightly unusual cut as a nice change from my typical pencil skirts.
Black long-sleeved T (Walmart), $0.42/wear
Cobalt skirt (eShakti), $3.89/wear
Black and white striped/polka dot blazer (thrifted, Jessica London), $2.00/wear
Black tights + black wedges (thrifted), $0.25/wear
Black/blue/orange floral infinity scarf (Target), $1.40/wear
Outfit total: $7.96/wear
Also sporting a stripe/polka dot pattern mix, this ground squirrel. I like it, dude! (Ah, a photo taken back when there was green grass growing in the ground outside; it feels like a lifetime ago...)
In other news...Let's catch up on some political articles (after yesterday's kittyfest).
First, a fascinating article about the State Department under Donald Trump. For me, the most interesting piece was this:
I keep thinking (and saying) that Donald Trump thought he was running for dictator, but it turns out he has to be the president. These kinds of comments from within the government only reaffirm that view.
Second, is the upper-middle class ruining America, as this article suggests?

First, a fascinating article about the State Department under Donald Trump. For me, the most interesting piece was this:
“They really want to
blow this place up,” said the mid-level State Department officer. “I don’t
think this administration thinks the State Department needs to exist. They
think Jared [Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law] can do everything. It’s reminiscent
of the developing countries where I’ve served. The family rules everything, and
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs knows nothing.”
I keep thinking (and saying) that Donald Trump thought he was running for dictator, but it turns out he has to be the president. These kinds of comments from within the government only reaffirm that view.

Utility Blouses
An Unexpected Color Combination--Monday, 3/6/17
Well, the weather didn't warm all the way up to 62 F as they said it would--it only reached 52 F--but it was still a warm day on which I didn't feel like wearing tights. So I took advantage of the opportunity to pair my new floral/bird print blouse with ankle pants and ballet flats to work. Of course I enjoyed the subtle pattern mixing with my leopard shoes.
*Burgundy/mint birds blouse (Loft), $25.00/wear
Maroon pants (thrifted, Lands End), $0.75/wear
Leopard flats (Nordstrom), $2.08/wear
Coral swag necklace (Kohls), $1.13/wear
Outfit total: $28.96/wear
I liked the mauve-burgundy color of the blouse with the maroon pants. The blouse has a lot of different shades of red, including this one, and I decided to go bold for its initial outing.
Also I just basically love these pants so almost any excuse to wear them is a good one. Because they're thrifted, it's hard to know whether any of the current set of ponte knit pants at Lands End are the same type.
This is the second of these Loft "utility" blouses I've purchased this season. Because I like the ones I have so much, it is tempting to BUY ALL OF THEM. But you know, maybe I should just wear the ones I already own?
Speaking of Which...--Tuesday, 3/7/17
I used this light grey +dark grey + color outfit concept as the basis for wearing...
...light grey + dark grey + bunnies! (And yet more grey because we are nowhere near bare-leg season.)
Cream/dark green rabbit blouse (Loft), $4.25/wear
Dark grey skirt (Walmart), $1.33/wear
Grey open cardigan (thrifted, JCP), $0.50/wear
Grey tights + grey ankle boots by Seychelles, $5.19/wear
Braided pearl necklace (Loft), $8.61/wear
Outfit total: $19.88/wear
But let's get real. Who wore light and dark grey better? Me or this American chinchilla rabbit and her two babies? No, we don't even have to ask. I have all the heart eyes for these buns.
In other news...Let's keep this cute animal theme going. Check out these funny cat Snapchats submitted to EQ by Robert. Do you have a favorite?

Pokemon Birds Flocking
This was a really crazy Pokemon Go filled weekend, so I'm only now getting around to blogging. I think Robert and I have fallen into a Pokemon Go obsession the way that we fell into a birding obsession 15 years ago when we were living in Austin and building up our bird list.
I was thinking recently that it's too bad that we've never really gotten into a birding rhythm up here. Partly it was that my PhD program basically destroyed my life for a while, making me lose the hobbies that I had been able to sustain while working 50+ hours per week in my masters program. I've also not really adapted to the effects of the different climate/seasons/weather cycles/daylight cycles. For example, at first, we would go out early in the morning like we did down south, but it was like the birds weren't awake yet. It's also hard to adjust to how birds are here in different seasons from what we're used to--like, what, there aren't ducks in the winter? Yeah, I guess not. And migration happens, but it's not obvious. However, I really do believe that the birding just flat isn't as good up here as it was in Texas and North Carolina. Lower density of birds, lower diversity of birds. I swear we can go out and our sum total of birds is like chickadee, song sparrow, and crow. I don't know.
Pokemon Go hits a lot of the same buttons, and as long as it's keeping my Fitbit numbers up, it's all good.
It's funny how being out in a place where a bunch of people are playing Pokemon Go is like birding in a place where a bunch of people are birding. I swear you could substitute bird names for Pokemon names and the conversations would sound the same. "Did you get the XXX?" "Whoa, that's a really good XXX." "A XXX?!?! Where???" "There's an XXX down by the... here, let me show you." It's like, Pokemon Go players are kind of like birders if birding were a normal activity--not requiring the development of specialized knowledge and skill over long periods of time, not requiring a lot of patience and planning, not requiring uncommon equipment, not requiring travel to wilderness-type locations in the early hours--that normal non-nerdy people did.
On this note, on to the outfits, with some of my recent purchases.
My New Favorite Jacket--Saturday, 3/4/17
Yep, the white moto jacket was a winner. It's such a show stealer that I kind of forget that this striped top is new also. The top is long-sleeved (bracelet sleeved, actually) but very, very lightweight so it will work well into the Spring/Summer season.
*Cream-white moto jacket (Loft), $35.00/wear
*Navy and white striped swing top (Loft), $17.49/wear
Skinny jeans (JCP), $0.42/wear
Blue pointy-toed flats (Nordstrom), $2.00/wear
Silver/teal peacock pendant (Target), $2.38/wear
Outfit total: $57.29/wear
Why Don't I Always Wear These Colors?--Sunday, 3/5/17
Today's Reverse Inspiration is the middle outfit in this triptych from the travel and capsule wardrobe specialist at the Vivienne Files.
All these teal and aqua shades are crazy flattering for a pale, blonde, blue-green eyed person to wear. If I wanted to create a capsule wardrobe in "my colors," this would be a good place to start.
*Navy/teal floral top (thrifted, Kohls), $6.74/wear
Skinny jeans (JCP), $0.41/wear
Dark teal drapey cardigan (Coldwater Creek), $2.14/wear
Bright teal flats (Payless), $0.76/wear
Outfit total: $10.05/wear
Today's bonus photo: Here's what happens when you wear a pair of fleece leggings to bed (because you were tired and lazy and didn't want to change into pajamas) and twist and turn on white flannel sheets for hours. Yep, as you abrade the leggings during the night, little pieces of flannel stick to the leggings and do not want to ever let go, resulting in flocked leggings that will ever only be worn to bed in the future. Flocking, it's not just for birds and artificial Christmas trees anymore!
This photo Robert took reminds me of the persuasion mini game in Oblivion. Basically, you walk up to an NPC and try out the four speech options (joke, admire, boast, coerce) as a wheel spins to indicate in a very confusing way how the NPC will react (love, like, dislike, hate) and to what degree (size of a pie piece). This rabbit's expression is what happens when you select a speech option aligned with the biggest pie piece and the hate reaction. Bottom line: Robert played the persuasion game with this bunny and lost, big-time.
In other news...I need to go get changed so we can exercise and watch Game of Thrones. No Pokemon Go tonight as the wind is absolutely fierce (and the wind advisory is in effect until midnight). Walking across the parking lot after work, I was hit so hard by the wind at one point that I actually thought I might fall over, and I'm not exactly so fine as a bee's wing that a breath of wind might blow me away under anything like normal circumstances.

You Can't Argue with Science
"Meteorological Spring Florals"--Friday, 3/3/17
My outfit was inspired by the grey jacket + orange scarf combination at the bottom right of this outfit array I saw on Pinterest.
One of the bloggers I read is an atmospheric sciences grad student who mentioned on March 1 that it was the start of meteorological spring. Are you familiar with this concept? I wasn't, but here is a basic explanation.
Anyway, it's fitting that for my sartorial Winter/Spring season that I'm sporting (haha) a wool hunting jacket...
Grey herringbone hunting jacket (thrifted, Relativity), $1.69/wear
Denim trousers (thrifted, Boden), $1.05/wear
Dark grey long-sleeved top (Kohls), $1.50/wear
Coral/beige/blue floral scarf (thrifted), $3.00/wear
Grey socks + grey leopard wedges by Cole Haan, $6.60/wear
Outfit total: $13.84/wear
...and a saturated pastel (my favorite kind) floral scarf.
And to take us into the weekend, some back-to-back Japanese action...or inaction, as the case may be.
In other news...Lately my typical daily outfit cost-per-wear has been so reasonable--under $15 for the last two weeks, for example. Well, with my recent Loft order having arrived and a few days of warmer temperatures coming up, you can kiss the $15 cost per wear good-bye for a bit as I bring out some fun new things.
To get yourself in the spirit of dressing for warmer weather, please enjoy this smattering of snarky micro-fiction inspired by the Spring 2017 Madewell lookbook, and take a moment to be thankful you aren't any of these women (and you aren't wearing any of their outfits).
